Uneven tire wear: what the pattern is telling you

Tires wear out. When they wear unevenly, they are telling you something else on the car needs attention. Read the pattern early and you can fix the cause before it eats a new set of tires.

How to check

Run your hand across the tread, or look at it with the wheel turned. Compare the inside edge, the center and the outside edge. Do the same on all four tires.

What you seeWhat it usually means
Both edges worn, center fineRunning underinflated
Center worn, edges fineRunning overinflated
One edge worn (inside or outside)Alignment is off
Scalloped dips around the tread (cupping)Worn shocks, struts or suspension parts, or a balance problem
Patchy, uneven spotsTires out of balance or a bent wheel

Pressure: the easy fix

Check pressure once a month with the tires cold, and use the number on the sticker inside the driver’s door, not the number on the tire sidewall. Pothole season and temperature swings in Hampton Roads both pull pressure down.

Alignment: the common culprit

Curbs and potholes knock alignment out over time. Signs include the car drifting to one side, a steering wheel that sits off-center when you drive straight, and one edge of the tire wearing faster than the rest. We check alignment with Road Force equipment and give you the report, so you see the before and after numbers.

Rotation and balance

Rotating tires on the schedule in your owner’s manual spreads wear evenly. If you feel a vibration at highway speed, the tires may need balancing.

When it’s time for new tires

Use the penny test: put a penny upside down in the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tread is getting low. Replace tires before they reach that point, especially before wet-weather driving.
